What is Black Friday?
Black Friday is originally an American phenomenon but as with like much else from the US, we have adopted it. Originally it marked the day after Thanksgiving and some also call it the start of Christmas shopping and many today also use Black Week to start Christmas shopping.
Where does the name Black Friday come from?
You have to go back all the way to the 1950s, here you encounter the Black Friday phenomenon for the first time.
Two different stories are described. One is that people met on the streets after Thanksgiving and therefore large numbers of people gathered outside and in stores.
The second explanation is that it is at this time of the year that the stores experience a turning point in their results and secure “black” numbers on the bottom line, hence the name Black Friday.
Which of the explanations you believe is entirely up to you.
